Everything the trust commits to is priced to the end of the next century. If we cannot fund a thing that far ahead, we do not begin it. Drag through five and a half centuries and watch the estate arrive.
Where we are now
Two hundred and forty acres under restoration, nine hundred trees planted in the last decade.
The endowment
It covers the roof, the yews and the oaks. Nothing else.
Settled in 2011 and deliberately narrow. It is sized to keep the fabric and the two plantings that cannot be replaced, in perpetuity, at a 2.8 per cent real draw.
It does not cover the café, the shop, the events diary or the staff who run them. Those pay for themselves or they stop, and one of them has stopped. Keeping the endowment narrow is what makes the hundred-year number believable rather than a slogan.
